Hazardous materials pervade modern life. Unexpected encounters with them pose additional health and safety risks a responder must be ready to identify and control. This two-part series reviews how to interpret threats and warnings regarding the presence of hazardous materials in multiple situations a first responder might encounter.

#1 - HAZMAT RECOGNITION
A primary task in any incident response is to recognize whether hazardous materials may be present. In this program, viewers see the ways that spilled or released hazardous materials are harmful to people and the environment; the four basic clues to HazMat recognition and identification; the types of occupancies where hazardous materials may be stored or used, and some typical containers that are used for hazardous materials.

#2 - HAZMAT IDENTIFICATION
Firefighters are often the first on the scene of incidents involving unconfined hazardous materials, and they are often called on to identify the material and take the appropriate action. In this program, viewers will learn the nine hazard classes defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation or DOT, the DOT marking signs used in transporting hazardous materials, how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook and the NFPA 704 marking system.
