INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER -

The Incident Safety Officer program provides training for fire officers and firefighters on the role and responsibilities of the Incident Safety Officer, and allows participants to practice some of the key skills needed for competency as an Incident Safety Officer.  Further, it assists fire departments in meeting the requirements of NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program, NFPA 1521, Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120  Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

Training Objectives: 
1.       Discuss the function of the Incident Safety Officer in the Incident Management System.
2.       Present the role and responsibilities of the Safety Officer.
3.       To show the characteristics of an effective Safety Officer.
4.       To observe an Incident Safety Officer at work at the scene of a structural fire.
5.       Become familiar with on-scene hazards in a variety of emergency situations.
6.       Practice writing a Safety Action Plan.
 
Intended Audience:
This training program is designed for Fire Officers who could be asked to assume the duties of the Incident Safety Officer either as a staff assignment or an on-scene appointment.  The program is also appropriate for firefighters who will be working on-scene with the Incident Safety Officer and must understand and appreciate the scope and duties of the job.

PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER - 

PIO

The Public Information Officer program provides details the role and responsibilities of the Public Information Officer, and allows participants to practice some of the key skills needed for competency as a Public Information Officer.  It aids fire departments in improving public relations in their community through improved media relations with local and national media agencies, including:  newspapers, television and radio stations.

Training Objectives:
1.     To train department personnel in the role of the PIO in the fire department.
2.     To give participants an overview of the key functions and responsibilities of the fire department PIO.
3.     To stress the need for cooperation with the media.
4.     To show trainees an example of an effective PIO at work at an emergency scene.
5.     To give trainees an opportunity to practice specific performance-based skills required in the PIO function.
