For 20 years, this grant has been helping first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources. These resources are necessary for protecting first responders and the communities they serve from fire and related hazards. The AFG is also an important part of the Department of Homeland Security’s mission.
Awards Criteria for AFG
The AFG Program supports the homeland security mission set forth in the DHS strategic plan to “Strengthen Preparedness and Resilience”.
When awarding grants, the FEMA Administrator is to consider the following:
-
-
- The findings and recommendations of the Technical Evaluation Panel
- The degree to which an award will reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage by reducing the risks associated with fire-related emergencies and other hazards
- The extent of an applicant’s need for an AFG Program grant and the need to protect the United States as a whole
- The number of calls requesting or requiring firefighting or emergency medical response received by an applicant
